Toulon

Toulon on the Côte d’Azur, capital of the départment of Var, is France’s most important naval base. At the same time, Toulon’s old town is thoroughly Provençal – with bright colours, enticing fragrances, and the bustle of southern France. Topographically, Toulon is characterised by the high mountains of its hinterland and the city enjoys 300 days of sunshine a year.

With the presence of the navy, Toulon has developed into a huge shipyard. In addition to shipbuilding, fishing, and winegrowing as well as the manufacture of aviation equipment are important economic sectors for the city.

In terms of tourism, Toulon focuses, in particular, on short-term visitors and passengers on ferries to Corsica, Sardinia, and Maghreb, for example. Toulon is also a popular port for the large cruise ships.

The University of Toulon is home to 10,000 students including many international students.

The city is also a year-round cultural hub with dance festivals, jazz sessions, classical concerts and, last but not least, a Book Festival.
